I'm headed to the sandy beaches of Roatan and Utila on June 11th - 26th. I'll be travelling alone and would appreciate any tips on places to stay, hang out, eat, activities, etc. I'm planning to spend ~$20-25/night for a beach bungalow or private room. Also, if anyone's gonna be there at the same time let's we meet up for a beer!
ps. Lonely Planet guide says there are wild monkeys, iguanas, and parrots on the Bay Islands. Is it true about the monkeys?

I was in Roatan in Feb.
Loved it. We were in West End. You'll never get a god meal in Roatan and the food prices are more then the lodging. I kept on wishing for cheaper dinners like Tipico in Costa Rica, or Stew Chicken and beans in Belize or Tacos in Mexico....the closed we got we baliadas, but they were more miss then hit.
We paid 45 a night for a nice motel room with view and kitchenette, but we knew we could find places for as little as 5 a night. If you are diving I think Coconut Tree Divers are fantastic and have airconditioned dorms for 5 a night if you dive with them for 25 a dive.
It was like a frat house...and fun.
This is a great resource. Has many tips. Prices for cheaper places to stay. Diving info.

I never saw any monkeys in the Bay Islands. There are some iguanas in Utila outside of town. The only parrots I saw belonged to someone in Utila, but he lets them fly free so tourists think the beautiful scarlet macaws are wild. Actually, there were some parrots I saw at the hotel I stayed at for a night in West End but I do not think they were wild. There are parrots on the mainland in the national parks and at Copan, but I never saw any just sitting in trees that I thought were wild in the islands. -

Thu, September 18, 2008 - 11:31 PMIguanas on Utilla are endangered after many years of being hunted by the locals for food. There is an Iguana breeding center where you can visit and find out more.
Utilla is much cheaper than Roatan. Are you going to be diving? I d say diving is best thing the Bay Islands have going for them.

Re: Honduras - Utila and Roatan
Wed, September 24, 2008 - 12:20 PMDiving is really the only thing Utila has going for it. Don't get me wrong, you can hike a little bit, and see some iguanas, and you can swim out 200 meters from Bando beach and risk getting struck by a boat or take a kayak to snorkel at Light House Reef, but diving is why people go to Utila. That and getting drunk. There re only two beaches and there are not that great. You have to pay to get into one of them. I know some people who decided to walk around the island and they almost killed themselves. The backside is all sharp volcanic rock and there are no roads, and in some places you'll have to swim. Most of the places you'll go snorkeling are on the west side of the island, beyond where the road goes, in the cayes and on the nirthside, and accessible only by boat or kayak. If you try to go on the east side of the island, you'll have to walk out over exposed coral to get to the drop off: bad for the coral and bad for you.
If you want to sit on the beach, go to Roatan. Utila is mostly English speaking and full of backpackers. There are more Spanish speakers and an astonishing number of Italian tourists in Roatan, but lots of people also speak English. You'll need to get around by taxi, or better and cheaper, water taxi. You can also walk on the beach though it is hot and there is little shade, and it can be rocky. There's a airport on utila but it;s not worth the price/hassle, except to see the clear blue water from the sky. Take a ferry from La Ceiba on the mainland, which leaves twice a day. it's very inexpensive, but sit inside so you don't get burned. It's an hour to Utila and a little over 2 to Roatan. There is some unofficial transport between the two islands, usually someone puts up flyers to pay $40 or $50 to ride on their sailboat or yacht between the two islands. The ferry does not run in between islands and it can be fun to save time doing it this way, even if it is about the same cost or more.
